Description
Highly skilled driving/operating function in the daily use of a heavy multi-axle diesel powered truck. Uses complex electrical and hydraulic controls to complete the workload safely. Reports to Sanitation Supervisor or designee.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Safely drives and operates a fully automated side-loading diesel powered garbage truck during the early morning hours for the purpose of emptying large, wheeled carts from neighborhood business and residential establishments within the City limits. Must use good judgement to safely position vehicle and manipulate hydraulic equipment in servicing residential and neighborhood carts and preventing truck from being illegally overloaded.
- Responsible for the daily cleaning of the truck, both inside and outside. This involves shoveling and
physically removing debris, which requires physical strength to lift and shovel a minimum of 50
pounds from both front and back of compactor body. Performs lubrication and maintenance service to truck and body. Responsible for the daily safety inspections of assigned vehicle and required CDL inspections
- Maintains daily records and reports all problems encountered with condition of truck and carts to supervisor and Fleet Management personnel.
- Assembles wheeled collection carts for delivery to customers and repair carts as needed.
- Manual dexterity needed to handle and operate complex hydraulic equipment with hand-held and foot-controlled levers and pedals simultaneously. Must be able to detect audio and visual malfunctions of equipment, and recognize other hazards such as overhead cables, electrical wires, trees and other structures while truck is emptying container into packer area.
- Willingly participates in employee development and other in-service training and safety courses as assigned; assists in training employees in safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment; assists in training employee on various residential collection routes.
- Unscheduled overtime is sometimes required with little notice.
NONESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates a sanitation packer truck as needed.
- Operates a clamshell truck as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum two years experience in the operation and driving of a heavy multi-axle diesel powered truck.
- One year experience in the operation of a refuse packer truck with hydraulic functions.
- Must be able to read and write.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in the operation of a front-end loader and clamshell truck is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience may be considered.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
- Must possess a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License and maintain a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.

- Must be able to comprehend, record and complete route reports and work orders.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to speak clearly and concisely and confirm receipt of direction for radio communications.
- Ability to work with a minimum of supervision using independent judgment in the field.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the employees and the public as necessitated by the work.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Must possess considerable knowledge of the principles of operation of packer type refuse collection trucks and large trucks equipped with hydraulic packing and hoist equipment. - Must be able to operate a standard shift vehicle.
- Must possess considerable knowledge of traffic ordinances and regulations governing heavy-duty equipment.
- Must possess geographical knowledge of Ocala.
- Must be able to operate vehicle safely for both day and evening driving.
- Must have the ability to avoid accidents caused by carelessness.
- Ability to detect needed repairs and to make minor operating adjustments on solid waste equipment.

Direct deposit automatically deposits your net pay each pay period to your checking or savings account at your own financial institution. Direct deposit is a condition of employment for a person hired by the City.
Each pay period the employee receives an earnings statement showing gross pay, taxes, other deductions, accruals and net pay. Enrollment forms are available at Human Resources or Payroll.

All full-time employees hired after 10/01/2013, apart from Sworn Police Officers and Firefighters, are enrolled in the 401a Defined Contribution Retirement Plan with MissionSquare. All contributions to the 401a Defined contribution plan are pre-tax and earnings grow tax-deferred. The City contributes 8% and employees contribute 3%. City contributions are 100% vested after one year of employment. You will be enrolled automatically and should take time to review your investment options at your earliest convenience.
Training Programs
The City is committed to provide training programs for all departments and all positions. Risk Management conducts classes in Defensive Driving, Safety, and Insurance. With rare exceptions, classes are offered during working hours, and are open to all eligible employees.
