Responsibilities
- Safely transport Head Start children to and from designated bus stops, field trips, and program activities.
- Comply with all Head Start Program Performance Standards, South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles regulations, and agency transportation policies.
- Conduct and document pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections each day.
- Ensure every child is properly secured using approved child restraint systems before the bus is placed in motion.
- Follow established loading and unloading procedures to ensure child safety.
- Work cooperatively with the Bus Monitor to supervise children during transportation.
- Perform required child-check procedures after each route to ensure no child is left unattended on the vehicle.
- Maintain accurate transportation logs, mileage records, inspection reports, and incident documentation.
- Report vehicle maintenance concerns, accidents, injuries, or safety hazards immediately.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly bus environment.
- Demonstrate professionalism and courtesy when interacting with children, families, staff, and the public.
- Attend required meetings, safety training, and professional development activities.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and agency operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
- Acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass all required criminal background checks, child abuse registry checks, drug screening, and physical examination.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience driving a school bus or commercial passenger vehicle.
- Experience working with preschool-aged children.
- Knowledge of Head Start transportation regulations and child passenger safety requirements.

- Thorough knowledge of safe school bus operation and defensive driving practices.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
