Retail Propane Bobtail Driver and Service Technician
Job Summary: The Retail Propane Bobtail Driver and Service Technician is responsible for safely delivering propane to residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial customers while providing dependable propane service, maintenance, and customer support. This position operates a propane bobtail delivery truck, performs required inspections and documentation, assists with propane system installation and troubleshooting, and represents the company in a professional and safety-focused manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Safely operate a propane bobtail truck to deliver propane to assigned customer locations according to route schedules and customer needs.
· Load, transport, and unload propane in compliance with company procedures, Department of Transportation requirements, hazardous materials regulations, and applicable state and federal safety standards.
· Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including checks of brakes, tires, lights, hoses, valves, meters, safety equipment, and related delivery equipment.
· Complete accurate delivery tickets, route records, driver logs, inspection reports, service documentation, and other required paperwork or electronic records.
· Conduct customer tank and system visual inspections before filling, including checking for leaks, damage, unsafe conditions, proper clearances, and other safety concerns.
· Provide propane service support, including leak checks, pressure tests, regulator replacement, tank setting assistance, line installation support, system troubleshooting, and minor repairs within training and certification limits.
· Respond to customer service calls, out-of-gas calls, no-heat calls, and other propane-related issues as assigned.
· Assist with cylinder filling, cylinder handling, tank maintenance, parts inventory, and general yard or plant duties as needed.
· Communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, dispatch, and management regarding delivery status, service needs, safety concerns, and customer questions.
· Maintain clean, safe, and organized company vehicles, tools, equipment, and work areas.
· Follow all company safety policies, personal protective equipment requirements, emergency procedures, and industry best practices for handling propane.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
· Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain within the required timeframe.
· Clean driving record and ability to meet company insurability requirements.
· Experience operating commercial vehicles, delivery trucks, tankers, or similar equipment preferred.
· Propane delivery, fuel delivery, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, or service technician experience preferred.
· Ability to obtain and maintain required propane, safety, and service certifications as required by company policy and applicable regulations.
· Knowledge of propane systems, fittings, regulators, tanks, piping, leak testing, and basic troubleshooting preferred.
· Ability to read delivery tickets, route sheets, gauges, meters, safety labels, maps, GPS systems, and service instructions.
· Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and commitment to safe work practices.
· Excellent customer service and communication skills.
· Ability to work independently with limited supervision and make sound decisions in the field.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
· Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver hoses, tools, equipment, propane cylinders, and materials that may weigh up to 75 pounds or more with assistance when needed.
· Ability to climb in and out of commercial vehicles, climb steps or ladders, kneel, crouch, bend, reach, and work around tanks, regulators, piping, and customer equipment.
· Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, snow, ice, and wind.
· Ability to safely drive in rural, residential, commercial, and agricultural settings, including driveways, farms, job sites, and customer locations with varying terrain.
· Ability to use hand tools, gauges, testing equipment, delivery equipment, and electronic devices required for the job.
· Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and comply with all safety procedures.
Schedule and Availability
This position may require seasonal overtime, early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and participation in an on-call rotation during peak demand, inclement weather, emergencies, or customer service needs.
