Position Overview

Under the direction of the Transportation Management Team, the School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule, ensuring vehicle condition, picking up and dropping off students, maintaining order and security, and adhering to all applicable laws and regulations. The Driver interacts with BGCGSD members, parents, staff, and the public in a courteous and respectful manner, addressing and reporting any complaints regarding schedules or service quality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Transport children, parents, and staff by operating a school bus or passenger van, adhering to driving rules, and maintaining safety protocols.
  • Conduct daily inspections, maintain vehicle logs, and document safety and maintenance conditions.
  • Enforce safety and seating guidelines, conduct health screenings, and provide temperature checks as required.
  • Respond to emergencies, administer first aid, complete accident reports, and follow emergency plans.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the vehicle interior and exterior.
  • Assist with vehicle maintenance transportation as requested by the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Act as a positive role model, ensuring punctuality and attendance.
  • Participate in safety drills and contribute to risk assessment and emergency preparedness.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of relevant driving experience.
  • Valid California CDL (Class

    B) with passenger, school bus, and air brake endorsements.

  • First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • Clean driving record verified by DMV H6 printout.
  • Ability to operate a school bus safely, read route sheets, and adhere to scheduling.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to monitor passengers and maintain discipline for safety.
  • Competent in road rules, safety practices, and procedures.
  • Preferred: experience driving school bus or heavy‑duty vehicle.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Successful completion of pre‑employment background check.
  • Compliance with drug‑free workplace policy.
  • Verification of influenza, pertussis, and measles immunizations for child development drivers.
  • DOT Medical Examiner Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
