JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving the operation of commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, and the maintenance of Town streets, rights-of-way, parks, lakes, stormwater facilities, and other municipal infrastructure. Work is performed under varying environmental conditions and may involve directing the activities of assigned crew members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Operates and maintains heavy equipment, collection trucks and specialized equipment used in solid waste collection, disposal and recycling.

  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance of solid waste vehicles and equipment. Assist with major equipment maintenance and repair as assigned.
  • Perform other duties of similar nature or level as required.

· Comply with all Town policies, procedures, safety regulations, and departmental standards.

· Adhere to assigned work schedules and attendance requirements.

· Safely operate and maintain Class B CDL vehicles, including ASL, rear load garbage trucks, dump trucks, utility trucks, trailers, and other commercial vehicles.

· Transport personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites.

· Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, including tractors, mowers, loaders, excavators, sprayers, and related machinery.

· Perform maintenance and repair activities on Town streets, rights-of-way, parks, lakes, stormwater systems, and municipal facilities.

· Perform grounds maintenance activities including mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, planting, fertilizing, weed control, and debris removal.

· Operate tractors, sprayers, and related equipment for vegetation management and herbicide applications.

· Install, maintain, repair, and program irrigation systems and related components.

· Perform preventative maintenance, routine inspections, and minor repairs on vehicles, equipment, and tools.

· Assist with construction, maintenance, and repair of Town facilities, playgrounds, fences, signage, drainage systems, and other municipal infrastructure.

· Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, chainsaws, pumps, and other specialized equipment safely and effectively.

· Respond to emergency situations, including storms, flooding, hurricanes, and other natural disasters, which may require after-hours, weekend, or holiday work.

· Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

· High School Diploma or GED.

· Valid Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B, with air brake endorsement.

· Minimum three (3) years of experience in public works, roadway maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction, utility operations, or related field.

· Experience operating commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination.

There is limited exposure to environmental conditions. Task may require exposure to strong odors and/or smoke, traffic hazards, extreme heat/cold or extreme weather conditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

· Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.

· Knowledge of public works maintenance practices, including roadway, stormwater, grounds, and facility maintenance.

· Knowledge of traffic control procedures and MOT requirements.

· Ability to safely operate dump trucks, tractors, loaders, mowers, trailers, and related equipment.

· Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.

· Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required reports.

· Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

· Ability to lead and direct assigned personnel in the completion of daily work assignments.

· Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

· Ability to work independently with limited supervision while exercising sound judgment.

· Ability to respond effectively during emergency operations and disaster recovery efforts.

· Must meet all Town driving and safety standards.

Pay: $17.00 – $22.00 per hour
