Position: Highway Maintenance Worker II: Bridge Crew Equipment Operator (61034892)

Operates heavy duty equipment in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and cleaning of bridges on the state highway system, including but not limited to backhoes, lowboy truck tractors, and excavators. Performs skilled manual labor related to grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete, and repairing and cleaning drainage structures. Assists with training in skilled manual labor and operates light to heavy duty tools such as circular saws, drills, band saws, chainsaws, grinders, jack hammers, torches, etc.

Conducts daily vehicle checklists and equipment inspections, ensuring all forms are completed accurately and on time. Inspects and operates motorized vehicles and informs supervisor of necessary repairs. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Operates equipment such as concrete mixers, dump trucks, forklifts, snow plows, spreaders, sweepers, tractor with broom, or rollers.

Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include operating medium or heavy duty equipment. May be required for extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required and must attain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of the normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
