Overview

If you are in this Customs and Traffic Officer role, you will support daily transportation, documentation, and regulatory activities while ensuring operations run efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring compliance with import/export regulations, policies, and global trade requirements.
  • Coordinating inbound and outbound logistics activities to support operational needs.
  • Managing relationships with brokers, carriers, and external partners to support efficient transportation solutions.
  • Monitoring and verifying tariff classifications, duties, and trade agreement eligibility.
  • Supporting documentation, reporting, and record-keeping in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Reviewing and processing freight invoices, duties, and related financial documentation.
  • Participating in shipping, receiving, and tracking activities while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborating with internal teams and stakeholders to support daily logistics and operational priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Qualifications

  • Must possess advanced working knowledge of the following:
  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized community college and/or university in Accounting or Business Administration with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the Customs function; or Honours High School Graduation or equivalent with four (4) years’ experience in Customs Brokerage
  • Experience
    • Experience in logistics, transportation, or a related field.
    • Experience working with import/export processes and regulatory requirements.
    • 3–5 years’ experience in Transportation and/or related fields. In addition, the position requires a working knowledge of industry standards and financial control principles.
  • The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations
  • Regulation classifications, rates, tariffs and terminology pertaining to road, rail, sea and air transportation.
  • The computerized shipping system, Windows and Oracle.
  • The incumbent will require a working knowledge of trade law—US and Canadian import/export control programs.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Strong knowledge of transportation regulations and compliance requirements.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and logistics-related systems.
    • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3–5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions

  • Working schedule:
    Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
  • This position is part of the USW Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the USW Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
  • Working on-site in an office and warehouse environment, where lifting and handling parcels or equipment is required.

Onsite at Chalk River Laboratory in Ontario. The site is located in the Ottawa Valley, near Deep River, Petawawa, and Pembroke.
