Bus Operator – Pay, Benefits & Role Overview
Pay & Benefits
- Starting Pay: $25.00 per hour
- Sign-On Bonus: Up to $7,500 (based on qualifications)
- CDL Bonus: Up to $2,250 for CDL with Passenger Endorsement
- Paid CDL Training: No cost to you—we’ll train and support you

Your Role
As a Bus Operator with ART (Asheville Rides Transit), you will safely transport passengers along fixed routes throughout Asheville while providing reliable, customer-focused service.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate buses on scheduled routes throughout the Asheville area
- Provide friendly, professional customer service
- Assist passengers, including individuals with disabilities
- Follow all traffic laws, safety procedures, and company policies
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections (DVIR compliance)
- Communicate with dispatch regarding routes, detours, or incidents
- Operate bus equipment safely (farebox, lift, radio, emergency equipment)
- Collect fares and maintain accurate passenger counts
- Respond to incidents or emergencies following established procedures
- Report accidents or unusual events and complete required documentation
Minimum Requirements
- Must be 21 years or older
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screening
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Willingness to obtain a CDL with Passenger Endorsement (training provided)
